The Flight

“You will never see me again!” I screamed. I knew I was running out of time as we approached the airport. “I’ll die there! I’m never coming home.”

“Abby, stop. You are getting yourself all worked up and we have to go inside now.” My father parked the car in the dismal parking garage. Ignoring my residual choking on tears, he got out of the car and began to extract the suitcases, careful not to get any dirt on his jeans.

Daddy always looked sharp, one more thing I hated about myself. In the last several years I had become more of a skeleton freak show than an attractive daughter he could be proud of. My face was gaunt and haggard and wore the look of an aging smoker. My breasts were flat and my waist curve-less, like a prepubescent boy. I wore sea-foam green sweat pants with the word “SPIRIT” in block letters down my right leg. The sweats hung around my thighs like a tent missing poles, but I liked them because I felt small inside them. A sloppy white t-shirt blaring “SPIRIT” as well, topped the ensemble.

“Abby, get out of the car.”

I debated for a moment, but knew that I’d never win. The wildest of my tantrums were no match for Dad’s strength, but until now, at least in the battle of wills, I had triumphed. Two days prior my parents played their trump card.

“We’ve tried everything.” My parents had me cornered in their bedroom. Mom spoke because I listened more calmly to her. “We’ve been patient while you’ve promised over and over to try. We are really, really worried about you.”

Mom’s voice broke there. Dad turned and glared at my little sisters eavesdropping from the bedroom doorway. Two sets of chocolate brown eyes and one blue pair ducked back into the hallway. Then he shut the door and stepped forward.

“You promised to gain ten pounds in two months.” Dad’s voice was taut. The six-foot-four man that I once thought invincible slouched beneath a heavy burden. “Over a month ago, you agreed to the ultimatum that you would gain eight pounds. You’re nowhere near that. You need help and this is not a discussion. Remuda Ranch agreed to admit you, and we need to be there the day after tomorrow.” Daddy turned and left the room.

I slumped to my knees on the floor. “Please, please, please, Mom! Don’t send me away. I can’t be gone for two months. You might as well disown me. I’ll die there!”

#Review: Fitness Confidential

I received a copy of Fitness Confidential, by Vinnie Tortorich and Dean Lorey, for the purpose of completing a review. My opinion of this book is solely my own, and was not influenced by any other factors.

Fitness Confidential could be summarized with a quote from the first few pages: I’m going to tell you how you can figure out which personal trainers are great and which ones suck. Vinnie speaks in the 1st person, directly to the reader, and confirms that he wants you to look at him as a trainer who actually cares about you. He invites you to walk through the advice in the book, and find the exercises or solutions that give you the “best bang for your buck.” He attacks commercial weight loss programs, and argues that they are not designed to help you lose weight, or get into shape. What is their design?  He contends that it is to sell you their products, rather than care about your health or long-term results.

What makes this book different from the thousands of other fitness books out there? I would have to say the shock value of Vinnie’s approach.  The tone is in your face, some of the stories are a bit risqué, and the language is a bit much. However, all of it seems to roll up into what is authentically Vinnie Tortorich, and displays how passionate he is for people to cut through the bull, and get real solutions. Reading this book is a bit like watching Goodfellas or the Sopranos, only he isn’t acting. Sugar-coating and hand holding are nowhere to be found in this book.

Speaking of sugar, how did so many parents and children get fat? He says that they did so by trying to get healthy. They buy, and trust, advertising for vitamins and cereals in the stores. What will you find in those store-bought vitamins and cereals? Sugar. “Does this sound familiar? ‘Provides 8 essential vitamins and iron.’ …That’s like adding vitamins to plutonium so you can claim atomic bombs are good for you.” He stresses that people have to learn what they are putting into their bodies, and make better choices. Diets are not the answer, and he quickly points out “nobody has the willpower to starve, …and diets don’t work.” So, what solutions will people have? Stay away from sugars and grains. Why? Because when sugar and grains enter your body, they are stored as fat. If you do not want to be fat, stop ingesting the 2 major culprits. Never fear; he advises that he gives his clients room to cheat, and doesn’t realistically expect any human to live successfully by restricting their food choices every single day.  “It doesn’t matter what you eat between Christmas and New Years, it only matters what you eat between New Years and Christmas.”

Tortorich walks you through the story of how his life was changed by weight lifting and football. He learned that the human body will mold into whatever you demand of it. If you remain on the sofa, and do not exercise, eventually your body will become soft and cushy, just like your sofa. If you start riding a bike, eventually your body becomes stronger and leaner, like a bicycle. Vinnie encourages you to do the no-brainer: get off the sofa, and start moving. When you are ready to crank it up a notch, and check out the gym, he walks you through the selling scams of many gyms, and shows you how to pick one. “Use the gym, don’t let it use you.

Overall, the book can be informative, practical, and at times, amusing. There are no gimmicks in this book, and the tips are common sense, and ones you have heard before. He shares his personal story, and how the common sense approach has helped his clients. Vinnie admits that he is “half drill sergeant; half armchair psychologist,” and he will not hold back from telling you how he sees things. If you are looking for sneaky recipes, or ways to lose a ton of weight by this weekend, this isn’t the book for you.  If you are looking for hand holding, coddling, and  über enthusiastic self-help cheerleading, this isn’t the book for you. If you are looking for stories that wouldn’t get your mouth or eyes washed out with soap by your grandmother or pastor, this definitely isn’t the book for you. However, if you are looking for straightforward, no holds barred, in your face truth about how to finally attack the fat, and get your life back, this may very well be the motivational, kick in the pants book for you.

If you have tried the other myth-busting, secret diet, motivational books out there, and not changed anything about your health and fitness, you might want to give Fitness Confidential a try.

#Review: A Mom’s Guide to Home Organization

Thanks so much, Space to Spare, for the opportunity to try Debbie Lillard’s new book!

If your efforts to work from home have been anything like mine, then you are welcoming ways to keep your schedule and home office organized. Author Debbie Lillard wrote this book from the perspective of a busy mom, and provides practical tips for getting things organized and under control. It was quite the undertaking to tame my home office, and it is still a work in progress. I look forward to posting photos upon the completion of construction. Construction? What construction? Well, we purchased shelving and storage solutions from everyone’s favorite Swedish store (you know which one, but they aren’t sponsoring this post, so I am not giving them credit), and will need to get them installed.  We also donated several bags and boxes of books, decor, and toys (yes, toys) to charity.

The book spends time focusing on the typical time demands for moms – from feeding schedules to household chores, and gives ideas for organizing time to get everything done. Some of the tips may work for many moms, but I would think that very few of us truly have an entire weekday to dedicate to only one task. If I could give one takeaway from A Mom’s Guide to Home Organization, it would be to make time for the space that I want. If I only have 20 minutes today, then I should use those 20 minutes in the most productive, fruitful method possible.  I made the time to focus on my projects, see the big picture, and dissect it into manageable portions. This guaranteed completion and satisfaction with the outcome. Organization is not a one-time event, but rather a series of consistent decisions and actions that yield a desired result.

I think that all moms could benefit from the tips that are shared in this book, and would find ways to make their days easier.  You can find a copy on Amazon, and see for yourself.

Fiber One has an offering of three flavors in their meal bars: Strawberry Greek Yogurt, Dark Chocolate Almond, and Chocolate Peanut Butter. These are exciting flavors, and let’s face it, this is certainly not your grandma’s version of fiber! I am not a fan of peanut butter, but my hubby, the Bald Genius, gives this one 2 thumbs up. Who doesn’t love chocolate? Only a crazy person, that’s who. If you are a little nuts, or feeling guilty about consuming chocolate (that’s crazy!), you can soothe your guilt with a Strawberry Greek Yogurt meal bar. You can fit an alternative bar into the diet of your busy day, and make sure that you are getting a fair amount of protein and fiber.  I applaud General Mills for this.


What would make these bars spectacular? Just as General Mills has taken the pledge to eliminate GMO’s from one of their cereals, it would be lovely to do the same with the meal bars. Moms (and dads) on the go will appreciate the options for quick meals. Health conscious parents could benefit from GMO-free bars, as well as some allergy-free choices.  I hope that General Mills will expand their non GMO dedication to their Fiber One brand.

If you are looking for a quick, tasty way to add fiber into your diet, there’s no need to grab grandma’s gritty drink mix or supplements.  Fiber One meal bars may just be the solution that you’re seeking. Try them out, and you just may discover a new favorite flavor.
